10830NAT Course in Crystalline Silica Exposure Prevention
Crystalline silica is a compound found in a variety of construction materials. Cutting engineered stone, mortar, tiles, bricks, and concrete may release silica dust, which can cause serious health problems if breathed in. The main silica dust hazards include:
- Silicosis
- Kidney disease
- Lung cancer
- Autoimmune diseases
This course is designed to provide the knowledge required to recognise the workplace health and safety risks and hazards of working with silica dust and implementing safe systems of work for the prevention of exposure limiting the effects of silicosis on worker health.
Work Health and Safety (WHS) is a relationship between the health of the employee and the safety issues of his/her working environment. WHS acknowledges the dual effect of the employer to provide a safe working environment and of the employee to fulfil his duties in a safe manner, with neither party having a direct or indirect adverse effect on the health of self or others when working with dust.
The skills in this course must be applied in accordance with Commonwealth and State/Territory legislation, Australian/New Zealand standards and industry codes of practice.

Silica awareness training is a program designed to identify and control the potential risk of exposure to silica dust. The training is primarily intended for those in the construction industry. It gives workers the skills and knowledge needed to reduce the health risks associated with crystalline silica.
If you need to cancel your enrolment prior to the course commencing, we require at least 48 hours' notice.
If you cancel more than three enrolments within a calendar year, you will be required to contact us by phone to enrol in future courses. CFMEU Education and Training also reserves the right to apply fees for future enrolments.

Who should attend?
According to the Cancer Council Australia, about 587,000 Australian workers were exposed to silica in 2011. The organisation estimates that 5,758 of those exposed to silica that year will develop lung cancer. Workers in the construction industry face the greatest risks and therefore are encouraged to attend Silica Exposure Prevention training.

What will you learn?
The main goal of the Silica Exposure Prevention training is to cover the risks of respirable crystalline silica. Participants will learn the recommended procedures for working with silica, as well as WHS control measures for reducing the risk of exposure, including:

Is silica exposure training mandatory?
The 10830NAT – Course in Crystalline Silica Exposure Prevention training is mandatory in some states throughout Australia. WorkSafe Victoria’s Occupational Health and Safety Amendment (Crystalline Silica) Regulations 2021 have also come into effect, making the training mandatory for specific works, e.g., engineered stone processing.
The 10830NAT – Course in Crystalline Silica Exposure Prevention course is nationally accredited training, accepted all across Australia.
