This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to work safely at heights in the resources and infrastructure industries.
It applies to those working in operational roles. They generally work under supervision to undertake a prescribed range of functions involving known routines and procedures and take responsibility for the quality of work outcomes.
Work at heights is undertaken in a range of construction work, including new construction, renovation, refurbishment and maintenance.
This unit also applies to workers in other industries who need to control the two separate risks associated with people and objects falling from heights.

Licensing/Regulatory Information
Licensing, legislative and certification requirements that apply to this unit can vary between states, territories and industry sectors. Users must check the requirements with the relevant body before applying the unit.
Note: The terms Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) and Work Health and Safety (WHS) are equivalent and generally either can be used in the workplace. In jurisdictions where the National Model WHS Legislation has not been implemented, RTOs are advised to contextualise the unit of competency by referring to the existing State/Territory OHS legislative requirements.

Entry Requirements
- PPE – Hard hat, safety footwear and safety vest
- Photo ID – Current WorkSafe High Risk Licence
- No jewellery to be worn on hands.
- Stud earrings only.
- Long hair must be tied up at all times when out on the hard stand or shed.
- Any other items deemed unsafe by the Trainer and Assessor.

Who should attend?
Working at heights is a high-risk activity, and a leading cause of death and serious injury in Australia. This course is designed to equip workers with the knowledge and skills to safely work from heights in various situations.
All workers who conduct or supervise tasks whilst at height will find this course beneficial to workplace safety. This course will enable you to comply with current WHS legislation and provide you with a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment issued upon successful completion.
Work at Heights training is focused on fall prevention and is primarily aimed at general construction, maintenance, mining, large factories or other work situations where work is conducted in a place where a fall from one level to another is possible.

What will you learn?
This nationally recognised course covers theoretical and practical aspects of working at height.
During the course, we will assist you in developing safe work method statements and risk assessments for working at heights. This training covers risk assessment, selection and correct use of equipment, rigging and anchor systems, fall restraint, work positioning and fall arrest systems.
This working from heights course covers:
- Regulations, Australian Standards and Legislation
- Risk assessment and hazard elimination
- Equipment selection and use
- Anchor systems
- Fall restraint systems
- Work positioning systems, selection of equipment and correct use

Is working at heights training mandatory?
The RIIWHS204E – Work Safely at Heights unit is nationally accredited training, accepted all across Australia.
The RIIWHS204E course is not a mandatory requirement for all work being carried out at heights, however, it outlines the steps required to comply with the necessary WHS Regulations. Under WHS legislation, employers are responsible for reducing or minimising health and safety risks at the workplace, and therefore this course is highly recommended for operators and employees.
